Writing and Being a Writer Are Two Very Different Things

Both are fine from the moment you know where you stand

In February 2020, right before the pandemic outbreak, I wrote this article.

At the time, I was just starting to write online, and Medium was still fairly new to me. I’d published some stories in a few publications but none of them paid me more than $100 ($2 was more the norm really…).

Imagine my surprise when, after publishing the above-mentioned article, I opened up my stats one day and saw that I’d made over $1500 with that story alone.

To say I was shocked is an understatement.

Going “viral” had good and bad consequences for me. The most positive one was that the pandemic broke only a month later, and while everyone was struggling with losing their jobs, I was benefiting from this unexpected income from Medium.

Not only that, but the success of that article gave me the confidence to start my freelancing career as a copywriter. It gave me this impression that being a writer was maybe not so far out of my reach.

“I could do this,” I thought. “I could write something that people would want to read.”
